All remodeling took place the fall of
2002 and winter of 2003. The cabin was ready for occupancy in the spring
of 2003.
Back
to "Colonial" page.
The crew
from Dick Ecker's house moving company in Pine River took only about a
day to break "Colonial" off the foundation it had been sitting
on for about 50 years and get it up in the air and ready for it's new
foundation. The
old foundation was pretty rotten and the cabin sagged in several
places. Besides a new foundation, we are going to add about 250
square feet of space, including a third bedroom, a second bathroom and a
new kitchen. |

Nothing about moving a cabin
around is pretty until it is all done. Pieces of the old foundation have
been dragged out of the way so the guys could get underneath and place the
cribbing for the large beams needed to hold "Colonial" in place until
it's new foundation was ready.
After the cabin is raised up
and blocked, it's time for the new foundation. Footings, this time below
the frost line, were dug and a new block foundation was laid. Here is the
cabin with the new foundation in place. You can also see where we tore out
all the old rim joists. The original joists were completely rotted away.
In some places, all that was left was some wood fibers mixed in with the dirt.

A lot got done in the past
week. After all the rim joists were replaced, the cabin was ready to sit
back down on it's new foundation. The guys from Ecker House Moving took
only about two hours to get it set down and remove the 45' steel beams the cabin
had sat on for two weeks.
Once the cabin was back on it's
foundation, the concrete guys returned to fill in the holes and backfill around
the foundation. All that was done the morning of Friday, October 11.
Just in time, too, since it rained over an inch that night.
"Colonial" is now sitting about 18" higher than in it's old
location.
The next step is to build the
new addition. We start on that Monday, October 14. The cabin wall
you see below with the siding removed will soon be gone also. That wall in
currently where the new bathroom and kitchen will be.

The next step was to build the
new floor and raise the new walls. The floor went on Monday, October 14,
and the walls went up the next day. (Photo, below, left) I need to take a
couple of days off now to pull docks off the lake and drain all the water out of
the lines so work on the trusses won't start until next week.
The photo to the right below
shows the Woodens of M&M Landscaping in Longville. They are doing a
great job getting the devastation around the cabin (tracked Bobcats really make
a mess) cleaned up, the grounds leveled and new sod down before the weather gets
too cold.

Work continues before the break for deer
opener. Lynn Zwart, a neighbor and local contractor, is helping me with
the new construction. We got the trusses on and the shingles on the roof
sometimes working in light rain or snow and always in cold weather. It's
starting to look like a cabin again instead of a construction site.

After deer season is over, Lynn and I
will start the next phase, finishing the exterior. First, all the old
windows in the cabin will be replaced with new vinyl clad sliding windows.
When all the windows are in, we will reside the entire cabin in cedar.
That will take us awhile. Working outside in below freezing weather makes
for slower progress. Our goal is to have the siding on before
Christmas.
__________________________
Well, we are getting there. Here
is the cabin on December 14. All the front siding is on as well as most of
the north end of the cabin. We took some time to build the deck before
installing the windows and siding to give us something to work off of. It
was a good plan because, as those of you familiar with the location recall, the
ridge slopes away quickly to the lake from the cabin. We still plan on
having the siding completely on by the end of next week although the weather
forecasters are predicting some real winter weather next week that might slow us
down. The railing and the stairs off the deck will have to wait until
spring.

And here is the finished (on
the outside, anyway) product on December 21. All the siding is on but
there is a little trim work yet to do. We'll take care of that next spring
when it's a bit easier to work outdoors. The last of the siding was put on
with snow falling in temps that didn't get above 30 degrees.
Now we will start the inside
work. The walls for the new bedroom and bathroom are already in
place. Then we need to have all the new wiring and new plumbing
installed. After that, we will start with the knotty pine on the ceilings
and walls. Last will be the new flooring. Probably get that done about 2
days before the first guests are expected to arrive. Just kidding, I
hope.

For those of you with a
touch of nostalgia, here are a couple of
reminders of the way "Colonial" used to be.
Remodeling plans include
all new windows, new cedar siding, and a new 7' x 20' deck on the lake
side.

Here is the
old view of the interior. The remodeled "Colonial" will
have all knotty pine on the interior, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a
large kitchen over looking the lake.
